Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, Cumbria, England is situated on the shores of Derwentwater in one of the most picturesque locations in the Lake District. It opened in 1999, replacing the old Blue Box Touring Theatre, and was made possible by an Arts Council Lottery Fund Grant. The resident professional company offers a year-round programme of their own productions in Repertoire (theatre) - a summer season of six plays, a Christmas show and a Spring/Easter production. The theatre also hosts festivals including the Words by the Water literature festival, a jazz festival, a film festival, the Keswick Mountain Festival and a Creative Arts festival. In addition, the theatre offers a wide range of visiting drama, music, dance, talks, comedy and film.
Theatre by the Lake started with the "Blue Box Theatre" which occupied the site of the current building from 1976 until its removal to make way for Theatre by the Lake in 1996. Century Theatre made its debut in 1952 and it first toured to Keswick in 1961, prompting the idea of Cumbria's first English Regional Producing Theatre. When changes to the Road Traffic Act brought Century Theatre touring to an end, the Blue Box then served as a venue for a Summer Season of professional repertory theatre in Keswick for the next 20 years. The theatre's Official Opening ceremony was performed by the theatre's president, Dame Judi Dench, and her late husband, Micheal Williams on the 14th December 1999.
